Random Fact of the Day - Sea Turtle

The largest species of prehistoric turtle weighed TWO TONS.

That's 4000 pounds! This turtle, the Archelon, was also 12 feet long! In comparison, the largest turtles today, Galapagos tortoises, weigh less than half a ton and don't get much bigger than 6 feet long.

What makes this really remarkable is that the Archelon didn't have the hard shell that modern tortoises have. It had a leathery shell over a skeletal framework. Also, instead of feet it had flippers, which makes it less like a tortoise and more like a sea turtle.
