Friday - Rebecca Black

The music video for Rebecca Black's "Friday" has been removed from YouTube!

Although this can only be a good thing, it wasn't taken down for the reasons that you're probably hoping it was removed! Yes, the song is laughably bad and probably should have been taken down months ago as a result, but the real reason is a disagreement between BLack and her record label. Earlier in the week, Ark Music began charging viewers with a $2.99 pay wall to watch the video on the site. Black's legal team responded with a YouTube take down notice and are threatening legal action if the record label does not comply.

Llama Font

There’s a website that changes your words to llamas!

It's called llamafont.com. All your letters turn into llamas! We gave it a try, and this is what we came up with:

Angry Birds

The enemies in Angry Birds were inspired by swine flu!

In an interview with game developer Rovio Mobile’s Ville Heijari, the origins of the rascally swine were revealed. In 2009, during the game’s development, the swine flu epidemic was at its height, and so the game’s creators were inspired to make green, sickly pigs. The developers at Rovio Mobile estimate that fans of Angry Birds play the game for over 1 million hours each day on iPhones alone!

The average giant panda eats for 12 hours a day!

And it's usually nothing but bamboo for the whole 12 hours! Bamboo isn't very nutritious, so they have to eat a lot of it to stay alive, about 84 pounds every day. Pandas also travel around a lot; an individual panda's home range typically spans 1.9 square miles. That's a lot of ground to cover. If the bamboo isn't plentiful, that range can get even larger. Also, when facing bamboo shortages, pandas have been known to eat grass, fruit, insects, dead animals, and even live rodents.

The voice of the Woody dolls ins't Tom Hanks, it's his brother Jim.

Jim Hanks is also an actor. He has plenty of on-screen roles, but a lot of his acting credits come from voice-over work as Woody from Toy Story. He pretty much plays Woody in all of his non-movie appearances. He also was his brother Tom’s “running double” in Forrest Gump. Check out his IMDB profile.

All zebras have unique stripes

The zebra stripes are some of the most distinct markers in the animal kingdom. Like a human being's fingerprints, no two sets of zebra stripes are exactly alike.

While no two zebras are the same, in general the zebras' patterns are most similar to other members of their own species. That way, you can tell which of the 3 zebra species a given zebra belongs to, by recognizing general pattern similarities. This might also be the way that zebras are able to recognize one another!

Left-handed people might have an advantage in playing video games

At least, Gamestop seems to think so. They cite research from the journal Neuropsychology that claims lefties outperform righties in tasks that involve handling a lot of information and stimuli. This would include driving while talking, flying a plane, and, more importantly, playing video games!

The research has shown that data that is usually only processed by the left hemisphere of the brain of right-handed people is processed by both hemispheres in lefties. Anatomically, the connection between the two hemispheres is larger and better for left-handed people, which makes them process data more quickly.

You can see more of this explained here.

7% of Americans believe Elvis is still alive

Some people even theorize that the body that is currently buried 6 feet underground in Graceland is actually a wax model, and that the real Elvis was spotted hopping on a plane to Buenos Aires 2 hours before his official time of death, going by the alias "John Burrows".

In reality, Elvis was found dead on his bathroom floor on August 16, 1977. He was overweight and his health was deteriorating due to his drug use. He suffered from glaucoma, high blood pressure, liver damage, and an enlarged colon, and he may have been suffering from degenerative arthritis as well. He was pronounced dead at 3:30 pm at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Though he is most certainly dead, he lives on through his music.

Whats up in 600?!

I'm finally back at Davison after what seems like a very long time away! Today was the day when all grade six teachers in the division got together to take a look at the RAD tests we did a few weeks back, and Friday I was gone to the U of R for my convocation! I asked my subs who were in for me to let me know what I missed while away, and also to take some photos of the neat events 600 got to take part in!

On Friday, 600 got a visit from some of the Mils baseball players who were here to introduce themselves, answer a few questions and sign autographs!

This morning our class travelled to Yorkton alongside the grade 4 and 3 classes from Davison to attend the GSSD Pow Wow! I can hardly wait to hear how the morning went from everyone tomorrow morning. Judging by the photos Mrs. Klus took, I really missed out!

Fire Rainbows

There’s a rare phenomenon called fire rainbows!
The fire rainbow is the rarest of all naturally occurring phenomena. The clouds must be cirrus and at an altitude of 20,000 feet at least. There must be just the right amount of ice crystals present, as well.
The sun has to hit the clouds at exactly 58 degrees. It makes the rainbow appear to be on fire, hence the name. It’s actually cold as ice, though. In the weather world, the phenomena is known as a circumhorizontal arc.
It isn’t a traditional rainbow, per se, but an effect that happens when light passes through wispy cirrus clouds at high altitudes. Even more specifically, the hexagonal ice crystals that make up the cirrus clouds must be shaped like thick plates with their faces parallel to the ground for the fire rainbow to appear.
The light enters through a vertical side face of the hexagon and leaves through the bottom causing the light to refract, or bend, like in a prism. If the crystals are aligned precisely, then the whole cloud lights up as a rainbow.

Giraffes

Baby giraffes fall 5-6 feet to the ground when they are born.

As the tallest land mammals, adult giraffes unsurprisingly also have really long legs. This is no picnic for their newborn babies, however. They enter the world to a fall of up to 6 feet!

After about an hour, the calf is able to stand up. It's able to run with its mother after 10 hours of being born, and in four months' time it will be able to eat leaves.

Bohemian Rhapsody

When it was released, Bohemian Rhapsody was the most expensive song ever produced
It's Queen's most famous song and was written by the band's lead singer Freddie Mercury. It doesn't have a chorus and instead has three parts: a ballad ending with a guitar solo, an opera passage, and it ends with hard rock.
The reason for the single being so expensive probably lies with the fact that it was a truly unprecedented song. Many people consider it ahead of its time because of how complex some of the techniques they used to record it.
The band rehearsed for 3 weeks before recording it, and the whole song took 3 weeks to record after that! The song wasn't recorded all at once, but in different sections. Mind you, some of these sections weren't just at different times of the song, but also different layers of the song.
The vocals were also extremely complex. Some of the opera chorus vocals were recorded continually for 10 to 12 hours a day, and they pushed the limits of what the current recording tapes allowed them to do. To give you an example of the kind of stuff they did, they had 120 vocal tracks that they had to fit in 24-track tapes.
In the end, though the result was one of the best songs of all time, and a song that has stayed in public consciousness until this day.

A woman had a waist that is about as wide as a jar of mayonnaise

Cathie Jung of Old Mystic, Connecticut has a waist that is only 15 inches wide! Her strange body type stems from the fact that she has worn corsets every days for over 12 years. She claims now to wear corsets 24 hours a day and boasts a collection of over 100 varieties!

She's not a naturally small person either. Her hips and bust are each 39 inches. In 1985, Jung decided to spend the next 7 years shrinking her waist. She imported corsets from England, and gradually worked her way down to her current size. She likes how it looks, but her daughter objected to her showing up to her school looking like that.

Her Guinness Records page. Or, if you want to see more pictures of Jung and her tiny waist, check out her website.

Ants can be used as stitches.

The ant can be placed on a cut, and the ant will bite the edges. It will lock on with its mandibles sealing the wound closed like a stitch or a suture. At this time you can remove the ant from it mandibles. The mandibles can remain in place for days as the wound heals.

In 61 years, the 24 rabbits introduced to Australia for sport grew to 400 million! Every year, these non-native animals cause millions of dollars of crop damage.

A pioneer named Thomas Austin brought the rabbits from England to his property in Australia for hunting. The rabbits reproduced so fast that 10 years later, 2 million rabbits were being shot annually without making a dent in the population. It was the fastest spread ever recorded of any mammal anywhere in the world.

The rabbits have devastated crops and native plant species, killed young trees in orchards and contributed to erosion by digging up topsoil. The rabbit problem has gotten so bad that Australians have resorted to using poison, bulldozers, and ferrets to keep the population at bay.

On the plus side, during the Great Depression there was always a readily available food supply.

Your thumb and fingers don't have ANY muscles.

Our fingers themselves do not have muscles in them. This obviously might make you wonder how exactly we can move our fingers. Well, the short answer is by remote control.
You might be thinking that we move everything by remote control, because the brain is what controls everything. But the fingers are special because of their lack of muscle.
Fingers are moved by tendons, pulled by muscles in the forearm. That's why if you flex your fingers, you can feel the muscles in your forearm. You could say that we don't directly control our fingers at all.
The muscles in the forearm and palm are connected to the finger bones by smooth, flexible strings called tendons. The way our finger joints bend is by the muscles pulling on these tendons.
This is partly why many people can't bend their pinkies all the way without also bending their ring fingers. These muscles operate somewhat like strings on a marionette.
The total muscle count involved is 17 in the palm of the hand and 18 in the forearm. It's pretty interesting that the parts of our body that we use so frequently are completely devoid of muscles.

Taiwanese scientists have made glowing green pigs!

These pigs had jellyfish genetic material added to them when they were still embryos. During the day, the pigs have a greenish tinge to their skin, and have partially green eyes and teeth. In the dark, however, their entire bodies glow a bright green. Amazingly, not only did this first generation of gene-transplanted pigs successfully glow in the dark, but their natural offspring inherited this ability as well.

One man invented Band-Aids, granola bars, plastic ketchup bottles, microwaveable containers and disposable diapers!

One man invented Band-Aids, granola bars, plastic ketchup bottles, microwaveable containers and disposable diapers!
His name is Stanley Mason and he died in 2006 at 84-years old. In his long and productive career, he had over 60 US-patents under his name. The most impressive thing is that they are things extremely varied in nature. In his career he worked as a professional inventor, working with many corporate clients to create products.
Some credit his success to his process. Before he even starts designing an invention, he first discovers the need for a product. If he realizes that there are many people who would buy his invention; then he spends time inventing it. This process led him to invent things as varied as band-aids, granola bars, and disposable diapers.

Random Fact - Pluto

Sunlight takes 5 ½ hours to reach Pluto.

The speed of light is 186,287 miles per second. It only takes 499 seconds (a little over 8 minutes) for light to travel from the Sun to Earth. You get a broad idea of just how large our solar system is when you think about it in this way:

186,287 miles/second x 5 ½ hours (330 seconds) = 61,474,710 miles to Pluto from the Sun!

Popsicles were invented by an 11-year-old!

Much like Marie Curie's discovery of radioactivity, this milestone in chemistry was discovered by accident. Frank Epperson was just an 11 year old kid when he left his fruit flavored soda outside his porch, with a stirring stick in it. Presumably because it was cold, or because the gods of invention came down to help him, the soda froze and he found that it had retained it's flavor. Eureka!
It took him 18 more years to actually patent the darn thing, and he called it the Epsicle ice pop. His children renamed it Popsicle until they sold it in 1925. It took the Great Depression for another genius to come up with the idea for the twin popsicle, which is just two popsicles stuck together. I think I'll melt three together and call it a Three Headed Monsticle and make millions!

Chickens, usually considered a relatively foolish animal, are actually smarter than most others! It turns out that chickens can be more intelligent than dogs and cats, and second only to humans and other primates. What distinguishes chickens from other animals?
It's their ability to anticipate future events based on past occurrences and the ability demonstrate self-control. Chickens are also able to feel stress, another feeling they were not previously thought capable of having, which raises a red flag for animal rights advocates because of the implications associated with being killed for food.

An island in South Carolina is home to over 4,000 monkeys!
You’re probably wondering why 4,000 monkeys would be in South Carolina, but the answer is actually quite simple. Scientists put them there. The island is called Morgan island and back in the 1970’s researchers were hoping to get a closer look into the habits of monkeys and so they brought over several hundred.
They were initially interested in seeing if the monkeys could simply survive and reproduce in a foreign environment, and were astonished by the results. The monkeys reproduced so well that the initial hundreds have turned into thousands.
Every year, 500 monkeys are taken from the island to be studied. Everything from polio vaccines to bio-terrorism encompasses the tests they undergo, and scientists say the handful of monkeys have the possibility to save millions of people. Animal testing is always controversial. What do you think about this island’s existence?

The voice actor for Bugs Bunny once went into a coma, and would respond in character!
Mel Blanc was the voice of nearly every major Warner’s Brother cartoon character including Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, and of course Bugs Bunny. An automobile accident once left Blancs in a coma.
Doctors tried unsuccessfully to make him talk until one doctor who was a fan of his work tried; “Bugs, bugs bunny? Are you there?” to which Blanc replied “What’s up, Doc?” in Bugs Bunny’s voice. The doctors then began to experiment with several others of his characters and Mel responded similarly. Eventually, the Doctors managed to lead him out of the coma by systematically going through characters until they asked for him.
He survived his scare with the car crash in 1962, and lived until 1989, shortly after turning 81. His headstone reads “That’s All Folks!”
Mel Blanc was, ironically, allergic to carrots. So much so, that whenever he had to act as Bugs Bunny chewing one, he would record those clips LAST. The sound technicians would take those clips and edit them into the right places.

Harry Potter Random Fact

Voldemort means "flight of death" in French.
According to Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, the proper pronunciation of the Dark Lord's name is also consistent with French: "vol-duh-mor" (with a silent 'T'). Rowling jokes that she says "Voldemor," but she's the only one. "Mal foy" also translates to literally mean "bad faith" in French!

The Knork

There’s a knife fork hybrid called the knork!

While the spork has achieved praise from airplane regulars around the world, few know about its cousin, the knork! Combining the cutting aspect of a knife with the puncturing aspect of a fork, the knork was actually invented for those without one hand, allowing them to cut their food without aid.

It was never formally introduced to the market, but its origins can be traced back hundreds of years. Horatio Nelson, who lost his right arm, is said to have used a knork, inviting the nickname the “Nelson fork,” which dates the knork all the way back in 1797!

Random fact of the day - Sandwiches!

Sandwiches taste better when someone makes them for you!

This is mainly because when we make food for ourselves, we get desensitized to the smell, and a large part of tasting is actually smelling. So when you make food for yourself, when you eat it, it's similar to tasting without smelling. When someone else does the cooking for you, and ideally when you're in another room, where you can't smell it, the result is different.

When you walk in to have your food, you get to smell and taste it at the same time, so it tastes better to you. The same principle applies to eating leftovers. Have you ever heard someone say that a certain food, tastes better the next day? It's the same idea. Typically, leftovers are preserved in the refrigerator, so they don't give off much of an aroma until heated. So there's actually a scientific explanation behind why your pizza tastes better the next day!

Random Fact of the Day for Tuesday

Most of the candy forest set in the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was actually edible!

Talk about dedication to your craft. The director wanted to make the kids' reactions to the movie set as realistic as possible. The big candy forest set with the chocolate river was built to be realistic and completely edible. The chocolate river was real, the giant mushrooms were filled with whipped cream. The trees had actual chocolate.

The director wanted the kids and parents to have such a realistic reaction that he didn't let them see the set until they filmed them looking at it for the first time. One funny thing is that the cup that Gene Wilder bites at the end of the song was actually NOT edible. He spat out the wax he bit off. It was soon replaced by a sugar one.

Random Fact of the day Monday

Scientists have come up with a blue strawberry by splicing them with Fish genes!

Scientists are genetically modifying strawberries in order to allow them to resist freezing temperatures better. They're doing it by artificial transfer of genes from a species of fish called the Arctic Flounder Fish. The Arctic Flounder Fish produces an anti-freeze that allows it to protect himself in freezing waters.

They isolated the gene that produces this anti-freeze and introduced it to the strawberry. The result is a strawberry that looks blue and doesn't turn to mush or degrade after being placed in the freezer. While they're not in production, research is ongoing. Let us know in the comments, would you eat blue strawberries?
